SANTO DOMINGO. One hundred and twenty members of the Central Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) yesterday requested that the Political Committee of the party meet in order to debate the proposal for modifying the Constitution of the Republic, in order that it would allow for the reelection of President Danilo Medina.

The PLD leaders, headed by the director of the Water and Sewer Corporation of Santo Domingo (CAASD), Alejandro Montas, requested the Political Committee to accept the proposal by the member of this committee, Ramon Ventura Camejo, in this sense that in the country consecutive reelection be approved, such as the model established in the Constitution of the United States.

"This proposal is aimed at achieving that the party should decide take the steps which are institutionally necessary in order to modify the Constitution of the Republic in order to establish the model of the American elections, which contemplate the election of the President of the Republic for two consecutive periods and then never again," they stressed.

Among the attendants at the press conference in which the document was read, where the controller general of the Republic, Rafael Germosen, the director general of passports, Iris Guaba; the Minister of Youth, Jorge Minaya; the Senator for Hato Mayor, Rubén Dario Cruz; the director of the Reformed Companies Assets Fund (Fonper), Fernando Rosa; the president of the National District City Council, Winnie Terrero, as well as several deputies and dozens of intermediate committee presidents of the PLD.

They said that the Constitution establishes the democratic mechanisms by which it can be modified without altering the institutionalism of the country, and they said that the president has a 90% approval rating and that 70% of the voters favor his reelection.

"Our Magna Carta is very clear as it establishes the Democratic mechanisms," they pointed out.

Danilo's people

Donald Guerrero, a businessman and part of the President Danilo Medina's inner circle was at the activity yesterday. He was elected to membership of the Central Committee on 16 January 2014, among the positions reserved for the party's Political Committee. His activities in favor of the reelection of President Medina have been going on for more than a year, and they have carried out vigils in the National Congress and in front of the Presidential Palace. It is expected that the reelectionists will carry out their activities during Medina's State of the Republic speech.
