We do not want a Law to benefit a particular party
SANTO DOMINGO. The three traditional political parties and the Central Electoral Board (JCE) yesterday renewed the efforts to try to approve the legislative proposal on the Law of Parties, through the mediation of the former rector of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado.

The clergy man stressed that the efforts are to achieve the approval of a Law of Parties which benefits all the political organizations, not just one in particular.

The party leadership of the Dominican Liberation (PLD), Dominican Revolutionary (PRD) and the Social Christian Reformist (PR SC) parties met yesterday with the President of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Roberto Rosario, and Monsignor Nuñez Collado for an hour and a half on the fourth floor where the Economic and Social Council meets.

Nuñez Collado said that they were trying to enforce the agreement signed by the presidential candidates in March 2012, in which they committed themselves to push for the approval of the Law of Parties.

"The three parties that are here have met in a spirit of harmony and thinking above all that this legislative proposal of the Law, which is in the Congress cannot be for a certain party, that it should be the result of a consensus of the parties which have representation in the Congress," he stressed.

The attendees

Among those that attended the meeting were the President of the PRD, Miguel Vargas; the legal director of that party, Salim Ibarra, and the director of Institutionalism and Justice, Eduardo Jorge Prats. In addition, Deputy Victor Gomez Casanova, a member of the legislative commission which studied the legislative proposal also attended.

The PLD was represented by its Secretary general, Reinaldo Pared Perez and the former Vice President of the Republic, Rafael Alburquerque.

The Social Christian Reformist Party (PR SC) was represented by its president, Federico Antun Batlle, who is also the parties presidential candidate, and the political delegate before the JCE, Tasito Perdomo.

"Finjus is not a party"

Given the question as to why organizations such as the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which had pushed for the legislative proposal, were not present, Nuñez Collado pointed out "Finjus, as far as I know, is not a political party."

He recalled that even the bishops were talking about the Law in their Pastoral Letter, "but we would have to go to a stadium if we called everyone in that has expressed interest in this Law."

Rosario, the President of the JCE, said that he had information that as soon as the next legislative session opens they will begin hearings on the diverse proposals for the Law of Parties.

The PRM was absent

Notable for their absence was the representation of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), which has 32 deputies. Regarding this issue, Nuñez Collado noted that the PRM was not present, "because these were the parties that were interested, which were approached, but the President and I (Roberto Rosario) have talked of having a meeting with them, and if they want to join in a next meeting well they will certainly be welcome."

Vargas, the President of the PRD, said that they are trying to achieve the approval of a proposal in which the control mechanisms are established which did the Dominican society has been waiting for 17 years in the national Congress.
