The Political Committee of the PLD meets today; they agree not to touch on reelection
SANTO DOMINGO. After six months of not meeting, and in the midst of a difficult internal situation, the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), will meet tonight in a thorny meeting where it was agreed not to touch upon the issue of the presidential reelection.

According to the points on the agenda, they only expect to reestablish the rhythm of work of the leadership body and return to some pending issues.

Yesterday, José Ramon Fadul reported that after a consensus reached among the members of this top level party structure it was agreed not to deal with the issue of the reelection, because they understood that it is not the best moment.

"Previously we have consulted with others that this is not the moment to cover the electoral issue... We understand that it is not the proper moment for us to take on a discussion of this issue at this time," he noted.

He explained that there are many issues to be dealt with in the Political Committee, such as the country's economy, the progress of the government, the national situation, internal party issues, and the customary self-analysis carried out by this body of political leadership.

Nevertheless, one of the aspiring presidential candidates for the PLD, Juan Temistocles Montas, assured reporters that there is no way to avoid that the controversial issue of the re-nomination of President Medina will be heard by the Political Committee. It is his understanding that it will be up to the President himself to ask that the issue not be included on the agenda.

"In the end, the body itself (the Political Committee) has the authority to suggest issues, so that I believe that the issue of reelection is going to appear," he reaffirmed.

For his part, Ramon Rodriguez (Monchy) said that the issue should be dealt with during the meeting, because Ramon Ventura Camejo submitted a letter two months ago requesting the meeting for this purpose.

The agenda is debated between the PLD President, the Secretary-General and the President of the Republic, and in addition, at the beginning of the meeting, the members of the body are asked if they have some point that they wish to discuss.

To be dealt with

Among the pending issues to be dealt with are the reports of seven commissions appointed to modify the regulations of the Central Committee and those of the Operation of the Unit of Supervision and Control, and that of the Operation of the Secretariats as well as also having to work on the Regulation for the Operation of the Disciplinary and Ethical Tribunal, in order to edit the rules to be followed for the Organic and the Multiplication of the Party Organs and a commission to define the rules to revise the lists of the PLD membership.
