Minustah soldier killed in Juana Mendez

A policeman is wounded and Fenatrado trucks attacked

SANTO DOMINGO. An incident between Dominican heavy truckers and Haitian demonstrators in Juana Mendez, caused the shooting death of a member of the United Nations Stabilization Mission for Haiti (Minustah) yesterday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Segundo Rodriguez Sanhueza, an Army Sergeant of Chilean nationality, who had arrived at the scene of the demonstration for the purpose of calm and they Haitians, but had been received by gunfire. A member of the Haitian police was also wounded during the incident, but his name was not released.

Rodriguez Sanhueza was married and the father of two children ages 10 and 3, reported a communiqué from the Chilean Armada.

The problem began when groups of Haitians tried to lynch a Dominican truck driver who was returning, but he was able to run away and hide in some bushes in the area, managing to save his life.

Faced with this situation, another group of truckers, members of the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (Fenatrado), decided to halt their operations for an indefinite period, or until they manage to put a stop to the rebellion by the Haitians.

They complained that Haitian vandals looted four of the heavy trucks that carry merchandise valued at US $100,000, that was going to be exported at the docks in Puerto Plata, according to the reports by their owners.
