A monitoring system for city governments is presented

The government issues Decree 85 - 15 which creates a presidential commission for municipal reform

SANTO DOMINGO. Motivated by today's celebration of the National Day of the Ayuntamientos, the government put into service the Monitoring System of the Municipal Public Administration during an act at the Presidential Palace which was attended by President Danilo Medina.

The system consists of a technological tool that would permit monitoring and accompanying the city governments in an effort to improve municipal management. A space for coordination is created between the principle ministries and public institutions tied to the strengthening of the city governments and which will allow the preparation of joint plans. One of the objectives, besides the transparency and the accountability, is to contribute comprehensive solutions to municipal problems by means of professionalizing the human resources, the planning and the social participation.

Mayor Juan de los Santos, the president of the Dominican Federation of Municipalities (FEDOMU), spoke during the act and he argued for a national policy and mechanisms in order to go from the current situation to the stage in which the local governments will be able to achieve goals of quality management.

"We need instruments that help us to understand and make evident this reality, that allows us to better diagnose what the situation is in the management of our ayuntamientos," he said.

Decree

For this occasion, the Executive Power issued Decree 85 - 15, by which the Presidential Commission for Municipal Reform is created. The objective is to create policies of local development.
