Hundreds of Haitians seek papers in Santiago in order to normalize status
SANTIAGO. Because of the pressure of time, since there are only 23 days left until the end of the National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners, hundreds of Haitians are filling every day the locales prepared by the authorities for those who are interested in going and defining their immigration status.

In the city of Santiago, the Provincial Governor's office, located between Del Sol, Benito Monsion and 30 March, has become a real human anthill, principally with residents of the neighboring nation of Haiti, who are trying to obtain the definitive documents that permit them to continue residing in Dominican territory.

From early in the day, the place is occupied by men and women of different ages. An employee of the Ministry of Interior and Police, who asked that she not be identified, explained that they have received orders to work on Sundays, from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon.

"This will be until further notice, since as you can see we have too many applicants," the informant indicated. She noted that they are attending all of the foreigners that still have not registered in the plan, but that the majority is those who come from Haiti.

According to what is stipulated by the authorities, the deadline to register in order to obtain the definitive documents expires next 17 June. Likewise starting on that date, there will be a 45 day period in which they have to deliver the documents to the applicants who have fulfilled all of the legal requisites.

It was reported that the number of Haitians increased due to the fact that they are working with laborers and employees of companies in the areas of construction, farming, commerce and with the street vendors.

Given the large number of persons that are going to the headquarters of the Governor's office in order to obtain the documents to normalize their permanence in the country, the authorities have been forced to increase the security.

In order to do this, the number of officers that work in these places has been increased. The people are attended by turn and also with the system of tickets.
