ASIEX supports National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners

PANAMA. The Ministry of Foreign Relations (Mirex) met in Panama with 20 Dominican ambassadors assigned to Central America, South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Asia for the purpose of instructing them in the strategy of defense of the immigration policy of the Dominican Republic.

President Danilo Medina declared last Friday before the summit of Chiefs of State of the Central American System of Integration (Sica) held in Guatemala, that the accusations against the country after the end of the first phase of the National Plan of Normalization are based on "false accusations of racism," as well as "threats of extortion."

In a press communiqué, the Chancery explains that there will be a series of meetings "in each nation where the country has diplomatic representation, with a line of action directed at promoting the reality of the advances in terms of immigration of the National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners, an initiative which has represented great economic sacrifices for the country, with an investment of more than RD$1.7 billion and which has permitted more than 300,000 persons with an irregular immigration situation to be able to register in order to obtain their documents."

Along this line, Chancellor Andres Navarro Garcia, will travel today to Washington together with the Coordinator of the National Plan of Normalization, Deputy Minister of Interior, Washington Gonzalez, and the Deputy Minister of the Presidency, Luis Henry Molina. The Chancellor will be received on Tuesday by the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States during an extraordinary session requested by the country. The trip will continue on Wednesday, 1 July, going to Geneva, Switzerland, where he will meet with all the Dominican ambassadors and carry out several activities.

Navarro instructed the Dominican officials to convene all the diplomatic Corps accredited in the country where they are stationed, in order to present to them the real and official information of the immigration policy which the government of President Medina is carrying out.

The Dominican Association of Companies of Foreign Investment (ASIEX) said that the National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners "was carried out in a legal manner in compliance with the principles which govern Due Process and during a reasonable period of time of 18 months."

The executive director of ASIEX, Patricia Bobea, indicated that in her opinion: "this national plan, completely paid for by the Dominican government, provided the opportunity to all those foreigners who resided in our country in an undocumented or illegal manner, to normalize their immigration status." Bobea feels that more than two thirds of the undocumented population in the country was able to participate in the plan: "70% of those illegal or undocumented."

An offense on social networks

The Presidency of the Republic reported that it is releasing over the social networks what is happening with the foreigners in an irregular immigration situation. The spokesman for the Presidency, Roberto Rodriguez Marchena, published on his Twitter account 12 messages regarding the actions carried out in order to normalize undocumented foreigners in the country, besides the announcement that the Presidency offers on its YouTube channel short videos with real stories of persons in an irregular immigration situation who registered in the National Plan of Normalization. The government stressed that 288,486 foreigners who are in the country, registered in the Normalization Plan. Added to these is the announcement by the Central Electoral Board that it recognized the nationality of 55,000 persons and their descendents born of both parents in an irregular immigration situation and of 8755 persons without papers of parents in an irregular immigration situation, who have the possibility to be naturalized in two years.
