Mission complete! Marcos Diaz swims from Oceania to Asia
Mabo, Indonesia. The first hurdle was cleared. Marcos Diaz successfully made his way from Oceania to Asia, the first step of his project to Swim the Continents with the United Nations.

After some situations that kept him from swimming the day that he was supposed to (13 May), finally, on 14 May at 7:55 a.m. he began the swim.

Marcos swam a distance of 19.4 kilometers and took 4:11:38 to complete the crossing. He left from Wutung Village in Papua New Guinea, and swam to the community of Mabo in Indonesia.

Marcos was accompanied by his support craft and Augusto Garcia, and protected by two Coast Guard cutters. Upon his arrival in Indonesia he was greeted by a large number of persons that crowded the beach to meet him and celebrate his feat.

The presence of Diaz has been accepted with a lot of enthusiasm by both countries, and before his arrival he was featured on the front pages of the local newspapers. He has carried out a series of humanitarian visits that have allowed him to promote the Dominican Republic and his aim that the entire world knows about and demands the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Objectives.

The next step will be to unite Asia with Africa, from Jordan to Egypt. Then he will join Africa, from the port city of Point Cires in Morocco, with the city of Tarifa in Spain, joining Africa with Europe.. He will end the journey by crossing the cold waters of the Bering Sea from the Russian island of Big Diomede to the United States island of Little Diomede, Alaska. This swim is scheduled for sometime between 22 July and the beginning of August.
