18,000 use Bonogas cards
SANTO DOMINGO.-The government placed RD$162 million at the disposal of the 720,000 families who received the Bonogas card for home use. The card allows consumers to take advantage of a RD$228 peso subsidy for the purchase of propane cooking gas at any of the 438 LPG stations around the country.

Meanwhile, today the authorities will begin handing out the remaining 80,000 Solidarity cards and next 25 October these cards will have RD$456 in Bonogas credits, including September's allotment. Authorities also say that by the beginning of October at least 15,000 drivers of "públicos" or "conchos" will receive special Bonogas cards for RD$5,700 for purchasing LPG for their vehicles each month. This is the first phase of this particular program.

These details were offered by the director general of the Administration of Social Subsidies (ADESS), Van Elder Espinal Martinez, who said that the resources were accredited to each of the beneficiaries in a special account of their Solidarity cards for home use.

Diario Libre reporters traveled around the city yesterday, looking into different LPG stations in the National District, and they found that the poor families did not have any problems in using their cards for Bonogas, even though some of the places won't begin to sell Bonogas until today and in others the folks had not yet gone to purchase gas. Espinal Martinez said that some Solidarity cardholders have not been able to use their subsidy because of technical adjustments that will be fixed in the next 24-48 hours.

The official said that yesterday morning some 20,000 cardholders had gone to LPG stations to use their card and 18,295 were able to use the card but 1,705 had some problems but now Visanet and Cardnet had been notified.

Espinal Martinez explained that the price of fuel is established by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and that President Leonel Fernandez ordered that his department place RD$228 each month. This amount can be used all at once or on several occasions according to the wishes of the cardholder.

A person with the Bonogas card has up to two months to consume each month's subsidy.

With the price of subsidized LPG at RD$77.93 this week, a family can purchase 2.9 gallons of the propane gas with the RD$228.

The official said "Clearly, at today's prices, the RD$228 can purchase nearly three gallons of gas." He pointed out that the government is trying lessen the impact of rising LPG prices on the poorest segment of the population.
