A funeral for the "death" of Venice
Citizens organized the event to call the attention of the authorities

Rome. The ships and gondolas of Venice cruised the Grand Canal of the city, taking part in the "Funeral" of the city, a initiative organized by the citizens to bring the serious problem of depopulation to everyone's attention.
The surprised tourists could attend the funeral procession along the Grand Canal where 300 persons took their boats and rowed behind the gondola that carried the casket that symbolized the death of the city.
The casket was later placed in front of the city government, the Palazzo Cà Farsetti, where a funeral prayer for the "Serenissima" was offered in the Venetian dialect. The activity was an initiative organized by the civic movement "venessia.com" in order to call attention to the fact that the population of the city that was 120,000 in the 1960s is just 60,000 today. "Venice is in danger," said Matteo Secchi, one of the organizers, to the EFE news agency.
"If on the 4 November of 1966 the Venetians remembered the great tragedy of the flood, last 21 October will go down in history as the tragedy of the depopulation," added Secchi.
The funeral ended when out of the coffin came the flag of the Phoenix bird (Ave Fenix), one of the symbols of Venice and of the rebirth of the "Serenissima."
The Venetians are asking the authorities to provide incentives for the resident population, and prohibit new hotels.
