Advances 51 years after Trujillo's death are stressed
Nonetheless, the historian indicates that there still exist practices of Trujillo that should disapp

SD. In the 51 years since the assassination of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, on 30 May 1961, democracy has undergone great advances. Nevertheless, many of the practices of the dictatorship remain present in Dominican society.
This is the judgment of the historian, professor and member of the Dominican Academy of History, Alejandro Paulino.
"As a remnant of Trujilloism, the spoils system (clientelism) of the government officials, the congressional people, the politicians, and the principle authorities of the country is noteworthy. These are the people who work at stressing the solution of the problems of the citizens on a personal level, when it should really be the institutions that guarantee the solutions to the collective problems," said Paulino.
He also pointed out as other situations that were typical of the dictatorship, the spying and the imposition of authority over the law.
Memories of Trujillo
Regarding the "nostalgia for the social order of Trujillo," Paulino is of the opinion that this comes from sectors that were benefited during the dictatorship. A point on which he coincides with the president of the 30 May Foundation, Eduardo Diaz. "Follow the roots of some persons that go back to that era of dishonor."
"The followers of Trujillo talk about a climate in which order prevailed, but it was a repressive order, forced through the mechanisms of control," noted Paulino.
For both men, democracy is something that can be improved upon. Diaz says that there is a tremendous advance in our democracy compared with the dictatorship. "Today we can vote. In that period you could not."
At the same time, Paulino says that although after the dictatorship the public institutions suffered a process of disintegration, "in no way should we sacrifice the levels of freedom and democracy that we have today in order to sponsor, in the name of this order, a return to the dictatorship."
Today the 30 de Mayo Foundation remembers the assassination of Trujillo, the Day of Liberty, with a ceremony at 5:30 in the afternoon at the Monument to the Heroes of 30 May, located on the highway of the same name and where the tyrant was killed.
