Amable says LMD audit seeks to harm him
SANTO DOMINGO. Amable Aristy Castro was not in a good humor yesterday. In a press conference, he branded the publication of an audit that shows serious irregularities in the handling of the accounts by the head of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD) a political persecution and a plan against him personally by the Social Christian Reformist Party. He was especially incensed that this comes at a time when he is fighting for his seat on the National Council of Magistrates.

"Why now? Why didn't they do this before? They want to distract attention, they want to silence me, and I told the country that they are not going to shift attention nor are they going to silence me", he said.

According to a preliminary report released by the Chamber of Accounts in March 2008 on the LMD budget year of 2006, and which first say the public light in yesterday's edition of the Diario Libre, the institution made payments of more than RD$70 million in "assistance), RD$89.2 million in food purchases without any receipts, and RD$32.3 million to employees that work in the entity.

"Regarding the content, I do not care, they can take it to the corresponding agencies....but they are not going to want to shift the attention from my rights. I am an adult, responsible for my actions, respectful of others, humble, and with a lot of faith in God and the Our Lady of High Grace", was all that he said when asked about the alleged irregularities.

He assured the reporters that he questioned this audit since it was an exercise "where they did not sit and talk to the incumbents of the League", violating the law. He said that some nine auditors are in the institution with the aim of carrying out a new investigation that he "requested formally".

Aristy Castro feels that there is some political persecution against him by the sector of the PRSC that he would only identify as "between Anacaona (Avenue) and part of Arroyo Hondo", because he has always been with the party in the difficult times, he has never sold his allegiance for any post, he did not accept being Vice President and because the Gallup poll gives him a good position.

In spite of the fact that he has still not been sworn in as the senator from Higuey, he said that he would continue to fight for the post on the National Council of Magistrates, and he would be there when the body was convened.
