Amnesty says Police have killed 154 so far this year
SD. Amnesty International complained that the Police have killed 154 civilians this year in the so-called "exchange of gunfire."

Javier Zuñiga, the of the AI delegation that is in the country, warned that the Dominican Republic might find itself in a tragic situation of the government does not find a solution to what it called "extra-judicial executions" of civilians that are carried out by the Police. The government also needs to find a solution to the criminal issues that are occurring in the country, according to AI.

"If the Dominican government does not control the Police action in the so-called exchanges of gunfire, they could be accused internationally for violating human rights," said Amnesty International (AI), with two of its representatives in the country now.

He said that the Dominican Republic is a nation that has the right to have a police force that is free of corruption "but the frequent violation of human rights is a very serious problem and the deaths of alleged criminals should be stopped."

Zuñiga called for "a firm hand" against the human rights violations in the country. He said that the Police need a reform that is adapted to the situation that the country is going through and where there are clear indications of the violent acts by police agents. The study by Amnesty International was carried out by the investigator Chiara Liguari who based her work on the statistical reports at the Attorney General's office.
