Antony Santos jailed in the holding cells of the District Attorney
SANTO DOMINGO. The District Attorney of the National District arrested the "bachatero" Antony Santos yesterday and took him to the holding cells on the fourth floor of the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva. Santos was arrested for violation of the Copyright Law on a complaint filed by Ney Nilo.

The decision came about after Santos found out about a request for coercive measures that was filed against him by the interim judge of the Seventh Court of Instruction for the National District, Evelyn Torres.

The magistrate refused to accept a RD$3.0 million cash bail bond, travel restrictions and regular visits to the prosecutor's office for a complaint for alleged violation of the Copyright Law filed against Teodoro Rodriguez who claims to be the author of the song "Me quiero morir."

Once the dismissal of the motion to impose coercive measures came about, the District Attorney presented an arrest order to be carried out against the defendant.

The decision authorizes the deputy prosecutor German Vasquez to proceed with the arrest of Domingo Antonio Santos Muñoz, the real name of the "bachatero," who is being investigated for an alleged violation of Law 75-00 to the detriment of Manuel Modesto Cabrera Salas (Ney Nilo).

The arrest order says that it was ordered because his relation to the events for which he is accused was proven and determined, "as well as his manifest lack of obedience to the requirements of the authorities for him to explain his position regarding the case cited, so that in this sense, it is correct to authorize the prosecutor to carry out the arrest that was requested."

The lawyers for Antony Santos, Carlos Balcacer and Carlos Olivares called the arrest a political persecution of the artist, alleging that it is related to the fact that during the last election campaign he supported the former presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) all up and down the Northwest Line.

Balcacer alleges that there was a preventive decree of Habeas Corpus issued in favor of the popular "bachata" singer, which ordered the end to be put to any threat or prosecution, present or future, that has not complied with the formalities established in the Penal Process Code, against the singer.

The reaction by Antony Santos

As he was led away to the jail, Antony Santos looked contrite.

Before his arrest he said that in the case of the songs "La Tristeza" and "El Mensaje" by the artist Ney Nilo, that this was a case of "pirating." "Besides, I am not taking his royalties".

He alleged that he sang these songs at a party and "someone" taped them and reproduced them and "pirated" them (sold illegal copies). He said that he did not go to the court appearances as requested by the District Attorney because they were to be conciliatory and he was not interested in coming to an agreement with the plaintiff.

The artist says that neither Ney Nilo nor Teodoro Rodriguez are right, because the songs that the latter claims to have written are his.
