Artist Candido Bido passes away

SANTO DOMINGO. The distinguished painter Candido Bido passed away yesterday afternoon. He died from cardio-respiratory failure caused by a severe coronary syndrome.
The artist had entered the Center for Diagnostics, Advanced Medicine and Tele-Medicine (Cedimat) in the Health Plaza on Sunday afternoon.
His passing came about 6:45 in the afternoon. His son, Jose Luis Bido explained that yesterday morning the doctors had performed a catheterization. He was 74.
His remains will be on view this morning at the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln. The press was told that tomorrow he will be moved to his native city, Bonao, in Monsignor Nouel province, for burial.
Bido is one of the most internationally famous of Dominican painters. Among his expositions were those in New York. Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Colombia, Spain, France, Israel, Brazil, Washington, D.C., London, Germany, Haiti, Italy, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Martinique, Korea, Yugoslavia, Japan and Belgium.
He was a professor at the National Belle Arts School. He founded the Candido Bido Art Center, which offers classes in drawing, painting and sculpture. Beginning in 1982, he inaugurated the Candido Bido Art Gallery and donated the School of Painting to the city of Bonao. Between 1976 and 1987 he founded the Bonao Central Cultural Plaza and the Candido Bido Museum.
He received prizes such as the First Place in the Esso Young Artists Competition in 1965; the fourth and Fifth place awards in the E. Leon Jimenes Biennial Competition in 1966; the Third Place award in the XII National Biennial in 1974; the Second Place in the XIV National Biennial of 1979; and the First Prize of the E. Leon Jimenes Biennial of 1981.
