Authorities dismantle trafficking network
LAS AMERICAS AIRPORT. With the dismantling this Sunday of an alleged network of traffickers of persons and the arrests of three organizers of illegal trips, the authorities have detained 370 persons so far this year.

Moreover, according to statistics from the Dominican Navy, as of now, 27 organizers of illegal trips have been arraigned on charges, together with 14 boat captains. The boats were used to take persons to Puerto Rico in a clandestine fashion. A total of 41 persons were prosecuted for violation of Law 137-03.

The statistics reveal that, of the persons brought up on charges, a total of 18 persons were subjected to coercive measures; 12 of them were released on a bail bond and 6 were sent to preventive custody.

The Navy explains that among the 370 persons detained there were 84 foreigners: 13 Cubans and 71 Haitians.

A highlight of the report is the fact that during the last 6 months a total of 69 boats have been intercepted and seized by the authorities. In just the month of May there were 17 boats seized and 3 in June, specifically in Miches, San Pedro de Macoris, Cabeza de Toro, Juanillo, Samana, Bayahibe, Uvero Alto, Santo Domingo, Sabana de la Mar and Boca Chica.

The network

In the case of the alleged network that was dismantled yesterday, the official spokesperson for the Navy, Colonel Juan Bienvenido Crisostomo Martinez, said that the gang used the Port of Manzanillo to simulate a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands, when their real destination was Florida, with a boat full of undocumented persons.

The report by the Navy says that the network was headed by Narciso Guzman Holguin, Luis Alejandro Sanz Pimentel and Rafael Alexander Caso Tejeda, who are under arrest at the Intelligence Department (M-2) of the Navy, in Santo Domingo.

The sailboat was captured by the Navy's fast boat Deneb (LR-153), but the captain of the ship escaped and is being sought by intelligence agents of the institution.

The intelligence agents seized several gas containers, a box of oil for the ship's use, along with several objects and the white Nissan Sentra vehicle (license number A-542987) which was used to take the illegal travelers to the Port of Manzanillo.

According to the information, the dismemberment of the network of traffickers of persons going to Florida is the result of tough intelligence work and the reinforcement of surveillance in the whole Manzanillo area.

The spokesperson for the Navy said that since last week, the Navy chief of staff, Vice-Admiral Homero Luis Lajara Sola, had ordered extensive patrolling in the territorial waters as well as watching for possible illegal trips.
