Billion peso distillery opens in San Pedro de Macoris
They will put the first new sugarcane mill in the last 70 years into operation

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS. With an investment that reaches almost RD$1.0 billion and with the co-financing of the European Union, the company Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos (AFD) inaugurated in the town of Consuelo an advanced technology alcohol distillery that will produce some 55,000 liters a day by fermenting the sugarcane juice.
The plant, considered by its founders as the most modern in the world for producing alcohol for human consumption, will generate 2,500 direct and indirect jobs, according to the announcement of Jose Hazim Frappier, the president of the board of directors of the AFD. The Vice-president of the Republic, Rafael Alburquerque, attended the inaugural ceremonies.
Juan Carlos Pelaez, from the Praxair Company, announced the construction of a world class factory to deal with CO2, a sub-product of the fermentation, and thereby avoid any environmental contamination.
"With the beginning of our productive active and the development of the exports, we will be contributing to the improvement of the nation's commercial balance", said Hazim, during his speech at the opening. The distillery was build, according to the official, in one years, one month and 22 days.
With the plant, in whose construction 12 countries took part, it is foreseen that the return of sugar growers is assured as well as the rebirth of the sugarcane harvesting in the area, which is currently deep in crisis. In order to carry this out, Hazim has requested the Dominican state to offer facilities that will allow access to the former sugar fields of the State Sugar Council (CEA).
"We have the capacity and the need to incorporate, in order to satisfy the production plans set forth in our company, some 100,000 "tareas"(about 630 hectares), which will become the source of jobs and the basis of generating hard currencies", said Hazim.
Sugar growers and UCE students
The AFD Company committed itself to help the sugar growers with access to credit to improve their farms and their agricultural techniques, and to pay them on time for the purchase of their sugar.
In order to fill out the human resource requirements, it was announced that preference will be given to students from the Central University of the East (UCE), whose rector is the same Jose Hazim Frappier.
