Book by Angelita Trujillo stirs protest
"Trujillo murderer!" and "Out with the Trujillos" were shouted out loud as they defended victims of the dictatorship
SANTO DOMINGO. The official release of the book "Trujillo, my father, in my memory", written by Maria de los Angeles Trujillo (Angelita) was unsuccessful, due to the presence of anti-Trujillo persons in the activity that was to be held at the Hotel Santo Domingo and sponsored by the Universidad of the Caribbean (Unicaribe).
At 6:00 p.m., the reporters had gathered at the entrance of the hotel for the start of the activity that was set for 8:00 p.m., while the anti-Trujillo persons entered without drawing an attention to themselves. It was not until 6:30 when the slogans "Trujillo murderer!", "Long live the butterflies", and "Angelita, murderer!" brought out the flashes and there was some pushing and shoving. The protest was headed, for the most part, by children, grand children, nieces and nephews and friends of Antonio de la Maza, Luis Amiama Tio, Rafael Augusto Sanchez, Antonio Imbert Barrera and other victims of the tyranny.
Minutes before the protest began, they were placing the reserved seating in the Caonabo Room, and a video feed direct from the JW Marriot Hotel in Miami showed the empty podium and a Dominican flag in the seat that was to be occupied by Angelita Trujillo.
With slogans and hymns the protestors frustrated the event
The sample copies of the memorial written by Maria de los Angeles Trujillo (Angelita), the daughter of the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, stayed in their boxes in the darkness under a staircase. Their release to the public was halted by family members of the persons who executed Trujillo, who staged a boycott of its release last night in the Hotel Santo Domingo.
"Trujillo murderer!", "Angelita, murderer", were the shouts that were taken up by dozens of family members of de la Maza, Amiama Tio, Rafael Augusto Sanchez and Imbert Barrera. The shouting grew bit by bit from 6:30 in the afternoon at the door of the hotel.
The Anti-Trujillo group arrived very discreetly at first, managing to enter the room where the launch, sponsored by the University of the Caribbean (Unicaribe), was to be held without being noticed.
Others got out of their vehicles carrying signs that they began opening up and that read:"Respect the Heroes of 30 May" and "Trujillo, killer and thief!"
They did not take long to express in words what their signs were saying. "They have wanted to tarnish our heroes. Then, our grandchildren, who are they going to believe?", said Magda Mejia Ricart.
"She (Angelita Trujillo) can say whatever she wants, but what she is saying is a lie. All this is a mockery", said Isabel Rosario de la Maza.
According to details released about the book, Angelita Trujillo indicates that the persons responsible for the deaths of the Mirabal sisters were several of the persons involved in the execution of her father.
The activity that was not
Dozens of persons joined Magda and Isabel and neither the hotel security nor the warnings kept them from the room.
"Trujillo, murderer!", "Trujillo, killer!" they shouted while they opened the doors. Inside, some astonished guests watched the group come inside. Those that had discreetly entered beforehand, joined in the anti-Trujillo protest.
They marched to the podium and began to sing the hymn honoring the members of the 14 June 1959 invasion. "They arrived full of patriotism, in love with a pure ideal!", they sang loudly. The National Anthem was sung several times as well.
The verbal battles were not long in coming. One lady that said she was in favor of Trujillo, called the group "frauds", but she could do nothing against the voice of those who defended the persons killed during the dictatorship, and she had to flee from the room. The same thing happened to Julieta Trujillo, the daughter of Amable Romeo (Pipi) Trujillo Molina. "I think it is unfair", said Trujillo's niece.
"She is taking advantage of the freedom that our country has thanks to the fact that there was a group of men that executed her father", said Pilar Amiama, the daughter of Luis Amiama Tio.
The room was emptied. The hotel personnel dismounted all of the equipment with the same speed that the boxes of books with Angelita's memoirs were withdrawn from the darkness under the stairs.
