Books and supplies, a yearly headache for parents

Minerd ratifies four year use of school texts

SANTO DOMINGO. Between RD$10,000 and RD$25,000 is the average cost for books and school supplies for a family with children in private, middle class schools.

In the case of school texts, the prices vary according to the publisher, the number of books and the grade.

Looking at several book lists that are handed out by these schools to the parents, Diario Libre found itself with one for a mother of three children in a private, middle class school who will be studying in the first and fourth grade and the third year of high school.

In the first case, she has to buy seven books with prices that vary between RD$300 and RD$800.

In the second case, the school gave her a list of textbooks that she will need to buy at a cost of RD$7.400, with a 4% discount.

With regard to the student that is in high school, he will need 14 books, of which they gave him seven, and she spent RD$5,000 on five of the books and still has to acquire two more.

She explained that she has spent RD$35,000, including supplies and school uniforms.

This is the situation that the majority of Dominican families must face before 20 August when classes start.

Regarding the textbooks, the Ministry of Education (Minerd) has ratified that the textbooks approved based on the criteria of Ordinance 6-03 are still usable until there is a new evaluation and preparation of new texts.

The institution issued a call to those who feel they have been wronged to follow the guidelines that are established in the Departmental Order which are: go to, first, the mediation of the Director General of Private Institutions, that will coordinate with the Director General of Consumer Protection, with the ideal of carrying out the necessary arbitration in a civil manner if it was necessary.

Likewise, Minerd issued a call to the educational community to watch out for the use of official textbooks and to comply with the terms of Departmental Order 16-12 in which the actors of the educational process to be alert for the care, proper use of and recovery of these textbooks.

Cost of uniforms

The acquisition of uniforms, backpacks, notebooks, and other school supplies, is another headache that parents have to face, and they complain of the high prices.

The cost of pants and skirts varies between RD$300 and RD$500 depending on the size and the quality of the cloth.

For blouses and T-shirts, they have to pay between RD$200 and RD$225. The prices of shoes vary between RD$300 for those of the lower quality and for the best one, between RD$1000 and RD$2000.

The prices for backpacks and school bags are between RD$400 and RD$1000.

In general, for school supplies the parents calculate around RD$5000 per child. And to this amount they have to add the school supplies that are required by the public and private schools.
