Cecanot is an example of quality medicine for the poor

SANTO DOMINGO. The Cardio-Neuro-Ophthalmological and Transplant Center (Cecanot) has become the most efficient and most modern center in the country for the treatment of highly complex illnesses. It is an option for the poor who, because of a lack of funds, were condemned to die.
Persons from different parts of the country have benefitted from kidney and cornea transplants, the removal of cerebral tumors, and others have resolved their cardiac problems for free in the health center.
Since its inauguration in 2008, the Cecanot, under the leadership of Dr. Federico Nuñez,is a modern health center, provided with equipment of the latest generation, including a neuro-navigator (the only one in the country) that works with software that reduces the time of an surgical procedure from eight to just three hours.
Located in the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, the entity was created by the government as an alternative for patients with few economic resources and under the new, decentralized model of hospitals which guarantee quality medical care and self-financing.
The center is also an alternate solution for the members of the Health Insurance Providers (ARS) and for the companies who can present it in their catalogue of Health Service Providers.
The Cecanot has the capability of housing 52 patients, including 14 intensive care patients. The Cicanot director says that they have offered more than 52,000 consultations during the first year of operations and the tendency in 2010 is that the number will be even higher. He said that the great demand for services and the government subsidy, of RD$14.0 million per month, have permitted financial balance.
The public acceptance is evident in the areas of consultation at the center, and to hear the patients tell it, this is due to the broad spectrum of services, the quality of the service and the low prices.
Specialties
The hospital offers four basic specialties: ophthalmology in all of its aspects, both clinical and surgical; cardiology and everything related to hemodynamics. This means catheterizations, pacemakers, valvotomies, and all types of cardiac surgeries. The other areas of specialization are neurosurgery and transplants.
Within the first of these, the hospital has the broad spectrum of sub-specialties as well as the function between them, like Parkinson's, epilepsy, surgeries to correct cerebral aneurisms, neuro-endoscopy, pediatric surgeries and others.
In the area of transplants, they do kidneys, corneas, hip and knee replacements and they are preparing for liver transplants.
Moreover, they offer dialysis. Nuñez announced that in the next few months they will be opening the area of ear, nose and throat (ENT).
-2008: 29,000 consultations, 7,500 emergencies
-2009: 52,000 consultations and 9,000 emergencies; 7,600 surgeries, including 139 brain tumors and 900 catheterizations.
-The projections for this year, which have not been added up yet, are going to be greater.
-RD$14,000,000 monthly subsidy
-RD$10,000,000 in own resources
-Personnel include 110 doctors, 125 nurses, 115 administrators.
