China and Japan will buy chicken entrails from Dominican Republic

The country will export beef and fruits to China and United States

SD. The markets of China and Japan have shown interest in the purchase of chicken offal from the Dominican Republic. Offal is a sub-product of chickens: the entrails, legs and head and neck of chickens. It is obtained at the poultry slaughter houses after processing.

The offal, called "pico y pala" in Spanish, is the most highly desired sub-product from poultry and much in demand in Haiti, but also in demand among Dominicans for making soups. The price of the product that reaches the Haitian market is RD$14 a pound.

"The poultry is processed in the nation's slaughterhouses, and the entrails. Feet, and neck are them packed and this is sold in quantities in Haiti," revealed yesterday the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Ramon Rodriguez.

He said that China and Japan want chicken legs and "we are preparing some of the slaughterhouses for exporting" to these nations. In fact, the Unipollo Group, from La Vega, just returned from Japan where they made commercial contacts for exporting chicken feet to that nation. The quantity of offal that the DR produces and exports to Haiti is not known.

The official said that chickens in the summer are usually of less weight. Before, they were of 4.7 pounds and now they are 4.1 pounds. They are producing 15 million chickens, but there is no excess, because they weigh less. In the country there is a consumption of 13.5 million chickens of 4 ¾ pounds and this results in 6 million pounds less per month. While it is true that there is more consumption of chicken, the reality is that they weigh less, and because of this there is no excess.

In the case of Haiti, the excess are the eggs. The neighboring country really does not consume much poultry from the DR, and the numbers that they are offering are exaggerations.

The country (DR) used to produce 20 million eggs a month, but by taking a million layers out of production, this represents 15 million eggs a month, which is the reason that the supply is balanced with the demand and the producers begin to recognize that they are not losing money.

The government bought nearly 100,000 of the layers, the rest were sold by the egg producers at RD$50 a bird.

Fruit

Rodriguez reported that they are developing, together with the Taiwan Embassy, a variety of tropical Asiatic fruits to send to the ethnic markets in the United States. The country also cultivates capers, in Montecristi and this product is already on the local market.

Among the fruits are the dragon fruit, the star fruit, green guavas and others that they expect to be exporting within 18 to 24 months.

Beef

Luis Ramon Rodriguez said that the Ministry of Agriculture is working to export beef to continental China. A commission came here from that country, reviewed the slaughterhouses and the health system and the country is ready to begin exports to this market, although there is no date set to begin the exports. He said that the DR is exporting meat to Surinam and they are waiting to get into the United States markets. He referred to the fact that the numbers say that there are two million head of cattle, the reality is that there must be closer to five million.
