Eduardo Estrella: "This is not the time for political alliances"
"They have broken the barriers of corruption"

SANTO DOMINGO. The presidential candidate from the Dominicans for a Change Party (DxC), Eduardo Estrella, said that there are governments in this country that have broken the barriers of corruption and this makes it difficult to say which government has been worse than another.
The political leader said that the Dominican population is calling for punishment of drug traffickers and administrative corruption and that the people, above all the young people, do not deserve what is happening. "It is in this sense that I think we have to take measures with a scalpel and we are willing and prepared to take these steps...With a "hard hand and without any erasers and clean slate."
The president of the Dominican for a Change Party, spoke with editors and reporters when he was interviewed on Dialogo Libre, sponsored by the Omnimedia Group, and which is transmitted on Mondays by OnTV.
For him, before reforming the Constitution, what needed to be done was to respect the existing laws and enforce them with the Police. "The big problem of this country is that there is no respect for the laws and here there is no punishment for administrative corruption. If there is no transparency here; if they don't take them to jail, tell me, after they established Depreco, which politicians have been arrested for corruption?" he questioned.
He attributed the problems to the fact that there is complicity which results not only in corruption but in drug trafficking and organized crime. Estrella has no explanation to the fact that last week an aircraft was stolen in one of the nation's airports, that a gate was stolen from the Police station in Bonao. And that in the Santiago cathedral, a criminal, after being confessed, stole a cell phone and the money the priest had in his pockets.
"In other words, they have lost all respect for the symbol and the institutions of this country, and so tomorrow we can't be surprised if they move the Basilica of Higuey, or the Monument of Santiago, eh? Or that they will pick up and move the National Palace from where it is...."
The presidential hopeful believes that in the case of the stolen airplane at the Joaquin Balaguer Airport the investigation should be taken to the last resort. He does not believe that a lieutenant is the person responsible.
He said that what is in play here are the foundations of the safety of the Dominican state, and he says that it takes political will in order to deal with the great national problems.
On the other hand, Estrella believes that there is a need to educate the population in order to put an end to the patronage and that in each election process the politician want to take advantage of the people's needs by trying to buy their votes.
Estrella feels that he is a politician with a vocation for service and because of that each time he has held a public position he has done so with transparent management, and because of that, no one has ever questioned his honesty.
"We are proud of the fact that we can say with some satisfaction that no supplier to the state or state contractor has given us money. Neither has the hand of Eduaro Estrella greeted the "man with the briefcase" (in the Congress), nor did I ever have a personal NGO or sell an exoneration," he said.
He stressed that in his DxC party he is joined by men and women that together with himself, with capacity and commitment to the country want to push the necessary transformations that the Dominican people want and need.
Estrella was a presidential candidate on two occasions, one of them for the Social Christian Reformist Party, from which he resigned; he was the senator from Santiago and among the different positions he has held in government were the Ministry of Public Works and the director of Inapa. And when he was a legislator, he travelled from Santiago to the capital on the Metro bus.
Eduardo Estrella feels that the foundations of state security are at risk.
Crime prevention
For Eduardo Estrella it is very important to prevent crime in order to fight it efficiently. For this reason he favors that besides going after criminals, police patrols should be increased with agents that are part of the 15,000 policemen that are assigned to private individuals and that, in his viewpoint, should be returned to the ranks, to the station houses in order to prevent crime.
