"El Fiero" by Hamlet Hermann wins Grand Prize

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.- The book, "El fiero: Eberto Lalane Jose" by the former guerilla Hamlet Hermann was awarded the National Book Fair Prize Eduardo Leon Jimenes. (El fiero = the Savage)

"When I climbed up here, I asked don Jose (Leon) who was the guerilla fighter in the ambush, because this is an ambush!" said the author who declared that he was truly surprised and moved.

"I think the people's poor memory was what moved me to write. Things are forgotten," he complained while he confessed that he wanted to discover what "had happened to us", and for this he wrote.

At the end of his acceptance comments, Hermann expressed "We have the language of the defeated. The winners write the history. The defeated tell about it."

The jury was composed of the intellectuals Manuel Salvador Gautier, Jose Manuel Guzman Ibarra and Jose Marmol, who, in their verdict, emphasized the narrative quality of the biographical-historical work that covers the important events that happened in the Dominican Republic between 1963 and 1973.

Hamlet Hermann received the document of the award from the hands of the Minister of Culture, Jose Rafael Lantigua, and a check for RD$450,000 from don Jose Leon Jimenes, the president of the Leon Jimenes Group, the sponsors of the prize for the past 13 years.
