Figueroa Agosto pleads Not Guilty to charges of evading capture
PUERTO RICO. The so-called "Pablo Escobar of the Caribbean", Jose Figueroa Agosto, pleaded "Not guilty" on the federal charges that weigh against him for evading prosecution and for filing false information in order to obtain a passport.

A report published in the newspaper, El Nuevo Dia, signed by Limarys Suarez Torres, says that Figueroa Agosto, also known as" Junior Capsula" offered his plea through one of his lawyers, Fernando Carlo, during an initial hearing before the federal magistrate Justo Arenas.

She added that Figueroa Agosto answered the questions asked by Judge Arenas by saying that he was 46 years old and had studied until the second year of university. During the hearing, the alleged capo was very attentive to the whole process and looked at the journalists and persons that were in the courtroom, among them his father and two of his male children. Also present was his other lawyer, Alex Rosa.

As he left the courtroom, Figueroa Agosto's father told the Nuevo Dia that he felt tranquil.

For his part, Carlo said that Figueroa Agosto had always been willing to turn himself in to the federal authorities in Puerto Rico and that he was worried about the safety of his mistress (Sobeida) Felix and all of his family.

"What I know is that he was extremely worried about the physical safety of Sobeida and all of his family. I doubt that the federal authorities have anything to do with these fears. (Figueroa Agosto) never feared the federal authorities", the lawyer said.

In the meantime, the spokesperson in Puerto Rico for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Harry Rodriguez, confirmed during an improvised press conference that they had begun some conversations with the law enforcement and federal agencies but nothing concrete had been decided.

The preliminary hearing for the evasion case was set for 16 August at 9:00 a.m. according to information published in the Nuevo Dia newspaper.
