SD. The Executive Branch order the dismissal of a lieutenant colonel and four lieutenants together with 12 enlisted men who were discharged from different military branches and the National Police. This move came after it was determined that all of them were tied to an international drug trafficking network that sent heroin and cocaine to Puerto Rico by way of the Las Americas International Airport.

The intelligence service of the DNCD was watching a group of officers after discovering that they were coordinating the shipment of drugs to Puerto Rico.

Likewise, two other lieutenant colonels were sent into retirement, and other superior officers and non-commissioned officers received different punishments, according to the agencies they belonged to.These punishments included arrests and transfers. They were personnel assigned to the National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD) and the Specialized Corps of Airport Security (CESA). The persons dismissed were identified as the Lieutenant Colonel Efren Varela Sosa, of the Dominican Air Force; the First Lieutenants Danilo Ginebra Simone, from the Army; and Carmelo Laureano Contreras of the Air Force; as well as the Second Lieutenants Biolenny Lopez Perez and Wilfredo A. Lopez Segura, also of the Air Force. These dismissals were confirmed by the head of the DNCD, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo.

These officers were tied to a network that on 2 December 2010 tried to send a stash of 145 kilograms, 90 grams of cocaine and 2 kilograms, 3 grams of heroin to Puerto Rico in a plane piloted by Americans Kevin Henson Kuranz and Christopher Schmidt, both in jail at the Najayo Jail.

When the investigations were over, it was recommended that colonels Juan Alberto Smith Peña and Gustavo Amable Feliz, of the Army and the Air Force be sent into retirement.

Also recommendedwas the transfer to their tactical units of Majors Alex Sanchez Familia and Franklin Fulcar Perez of the Army, in addition to disciplinary actions of 30 and 10 days of severe and simple arrest against Colonel Adalberto Castillo Perez, from the Air Force, and the First Lieutenant Arsenio Sepulveda Gonzalez, also of the Air Force. Other punishments fell on Second Lieutenants Jose A. Diaz Diaz, and Joel A. De la Cruz Beltre of the Army who were transferred to tactical units and the transfer to their military branches of Sergeants Major Hedi F. Sanchez Garcia, of the National Police and Teury Quezada Geltre of the National Army.

The Executive Branch ordered the dismissal of the officers after hearing a recommendation made by the Minister of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Virgilio Perez Feliz. The group is accused of complicity with an international drug trafficking network that moves drugs overseas, using the Dominican Republic as a bridge for its shipments.
