SANTO DOMINGO. The capital awoke yesterday to the sad news of the demise of the outstanding artist Freddy Beras Goico in New York City.
As time passed, the radio, television and social networks on the Internet as well as the on-line newspapers reported the news.
At once, condolences were sent to the family of the man who in life was the most complete artist of the Dominican Republic. Pancreatic cancer defeated Freddy, four years after it was detected. He died just three days from his 70th birthday.
At the Palace of Fine Arts
The body of Freddy Beras Goico will be brought today to the Dominican Republic on a flight that will arrive at 4:30 in the afternoon at the Las Americas International Airport.
There will be public viewing starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Palace of Fine Arts.
The family of Freddy Veras Goico realized the fact that none of the funeral homes in the country could receive the number of persons that will pay their last respects. Because of this, his son Giancarlo Beras-Goico Mejia said that at first they thought of using the Sports Palace, but later they received a suggestion that they use the Palace of Fine Arts for the viewing. "We still cannot say when the burial will take place, since this will be settled tomorrow", he said.
Appreciation
Giancarlo, who kept the public informed with regard to the health of his father, took advantage of the moment to thank the solidarity that the family received from the people from all over, as well as the artistic community.
"We appreciate the prayers, the calls and the commentaries that have been made both publicly and privately regarding our father's illness", he told reporters.
He explained that the family is very hurt, because no matter how much one prepares for the loss of a loved one, the pain is inevitable. "I am very hurt. No matter how much one wants to, you are never prepared for this, but I am tranquil. His face and the smile on his face at the time of death will never be erased from my mind".
Giancarlos Beras said that yesterday morning they received a call from President Leonel Fernandez and his wife, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez. "In the name of our family, we give thanks to the President and Doña Margarita for the sentiments they expressed", he explained.
