Grief over passing of Bishop Roque Adames

SANTIAGO. Great sorrow gripped the province of Santiago with the death of Bishop Emeritus Roque Adames Rodriguez, who had been suffering for several years from different health issues.
The bishop died Saturday night at 80 years of age as he received medical attention at the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago (HOMS).
His body was placed in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Annunciation of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) where yesterday the Archbishop of Santiago, Monsignor Ramon de la Rosa y Carpio, offered Mass.
During the religious service, De la Rosa y Carpio pointed out the humane qualities and virtues of Monsignor Roque Adames who was close to celebrating his 81st birthday.
"Our bishop passed away with incredible peace and for those of us who witnessed this, it was something marvelous, it was sharing and giving testimony of an exemplary life", said the archbishop.
The bishop will be laid to rest on 8 November in a crypt at the Church of the Annunciation, and later he will be moved to the Cathedral which is currently undergoing renovation, but no date was given for the transfer.
Next Wednesday, the bishop will be on view in Santo Domingo and masses will be said.
For 26 years Bishop Adames Rodriguez occupied the bishop's office of Santiago de los Caballeros and was tied to academic and social organizations such as the PUCMM, of which he was the rector, as well as the president of Plan Sierra and he founded the weekly magazine "Camino".
During his Episcopal tenure, Bishop Adames started the so-called ecclesiastical structure called Assembly Presidents that was an innovation in the Dominican church and influences other nations.
He was born in the rural community of Janico, in 1928, and ordained in 1954 and elevated to the bishop's chair in 1966. He was always considered to be one of the Catholic prelates with the greatest intellectual preparation in the country.
