Groups accept promises and halt strikes

The strike in Salcedo which had been called for 72 hours by the popular organizations and merchants was lifted after a meeting at the provincial governor’s office in which government officials promised to start work today on the highway to Monte Llano-El Saman-El Jobo that joins the mountain area with the city.
The Vice-Minister of Public Works, Sergio Hernandez, who took part in the meeting, said that the project implied an investment of more than RD$200 million and would be ready within 12 months.
The provincial governor Vinicio Gonzalez, merchant Eddy Vasquez, Mayor Roquelin Jerez and the spokesperson of the Council of Popular Struggle (Colpo), Dario Camilo took part in the meeting that lasted for more than five hours.
For his part, the governor announced that several social projects would be built in the Rabo Duro sector and in the community of El Clavijo, where creeks would be lined with wire-mesh, rock filled barriers and other projects would be built.
In the community of Boano the majority of the businesses opened their doors in the early morning hours yesterday, while schools re-opened, and transportation services and other productive activities were reactivated.
The spokesperson for the Coordinator of Popular Organizations for Bonao, Juan Liranzo, said that they decided to give a 30 day grace period for the government to pay attention to their demands.
Their demands include an immediate reduction of the cost of basic foods, the end of constructions and delivery of the buildings of Curce-UASD, a definitive solution to the problem of water scarcity, and an end to power outages among other issues.
In San Jose de las Matas, the Council for Mountain Struggle carried out yesterday a 12 hour general strike in the city of San Jose de las Matas (Sajoma) as part of their fight to have several highways in the area that are damaged rebuilt.
More than 30 communities of the municipality joined in the protest to demand the construction of the highway connecting Santiago with Sajoma, El Rubio and Moncion.
Diario Libre
