Increase in suicide rate in Dominican Republic over last nine years

Most take place in the home; relationships are the most common cause for young people

SD. Since 2003 in the Dominican Republic there exists a growing tendency for suicides, increasing by 57% between that date and 2012, with more men than women committing suicide.

Last year 638 persons committed suicide, and in 2003 there were some 406 according to the report from the National Statistical Office (ONE) which defines suicide in the country as "an eminently masculine phenomena."

"Nevertheless, there are a growing number of female suicides; in the nine years between 2003 and 2012, the number of women who died by suicide increased by 106%, increasing from 48 to 98 cases," said the analysis.

The ONE estimates that the most common causes of the suicides committed in 2012 were health problems, relationship issues and family conflicts. The study also mentions economic situations, mental illness and intra-familial violence.

Among the men the most common causes of suicide were health or economic issues. Among the women, the causes were mental illness and family conflicts.

The taking of one's life has become a phenomena of the young, with over half (52.2%) occurring between ages of 20 and 44 years of age.

However, there exist some noteworthy differences between the sexes. Adolescents between 15 and 19 make up 12.4% of the female suicides, and their rate decreases quickly after 44 years of age.

Among the men, the suicide behavior appears to start after 20 years of age; it also goes down sharply after 44 years of age, but different from the women, it spikes after 65 years of age, according to ONE.

Numbers by year

The means used for suicide are mostly by hanging (used in 52% of all suicides between 2007 and 2012), poisoning (21.3%) and firearms (20.2%). The women are more liable to use poison and the men a firearm, although both use hanging as the principle method. In 2004 there were 280 suicides, in 2005 there were 518, in 2006 there were 400, in 2007 there were 514, in 2008 it went up to 533, in 2009, 525, in 2010 there were 549 and in 2011 it climbed to 637.
