Judge rejects release of Mary Pelaez

SAN CRISTOBAL. The judge for the Execution of the Sentence for San Cristobal, Willys de Jesus Nuñez, rejected the request for parole by Mary Elvira Pelaez Frappier, who is serving a five year sentence in prison after being found guilty of money laundering of funds tied to the network of the Puerto Rican capo Jose David Figueroa Agosto.
The judge accepted the request by the Justice Department, represented by Faustino Pulinario Romero, whose position was that the society was not morally compensated and that it still feels that the feeling is palpable regarding the crimes committed.
Moreover, he said that sufficient time has not gone by for the inmate to have regenerated.
During an audience last 2 December, Mary Pelaez after breaking out in tears, showed she was sorry, recognized the error committed and suggested that her situation has changed due to the experience she has gone through.
Pelaez is being held in the Najayo-Women's Prison, which is part of the new model penitentiary system.
