CMD calls for prevention; Public Health investigates death associated with disease

SANTO DOMINGO. The recording of more than 20 cases suspected of being cholera, the majority from the barrio of La Cienaga, put into evidence the fact that there is an outbreak of the disease in the sector, where the complaint of four fatalities from this disease is in place.
The persons affected with symptoms of the disease are taken to the Luis Eduardo Aybar, Francisco Moscoso Puello hospitals and to the Integrated Clinic I in Villa Duarte.
At the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital yesterday morning there were seven persons hospitalized, the majority from La Cienaga, the others from Villa Mella and Villa Francisca.
In the meantime, at the Centro Clinico Real, Jose Antonio Medina, 39, is under intensive care with the suspicion that he has cholera.
Medina also lives in La Cienaga and was hospitalized last Monday after his family decided to remove him from the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital where he spent tow days with vomiting and diarrhea.
Yesterday the number of persons in these health institutions that said that they had diarrhea was evident. The majority them were told to get analysis, they were given rehydration fluids and sent home.
This was the case of Ramona Lore, a resident of the Respaldo 9 Street in La Cienaga, where several cases have been found and because of the fear of contracting the disease and with the symptoms that reveal its presence, she went to the hospital.
Report from Public Health
Contrary to what the relatives of four persons who died in that sector are saying, the Ministry of Public Health reiterated that there have been no confirmed deaths from cholera in the barrio and that they are only investigating the death of an 85 year old male.
The authorities have registered 20 cases during Epidemiological Week 18 of the outbreak, of which 9 are from Health Area IV, which includes La Cienaga.
The Deputy Minister of Collective health, Jose Rodriguez Aybar, said that in La Cienaga only one person has died from cholera.
He said that this fatality was reported at the beginning of April.
He said that the president of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), Menen Caba, was surprised by what he saw in the barrio because he does not live and work in these communities. Rodriguez Aybar pointed out that the preventive actions taken against cholera all over the country since last October are still in place.
CMD and cholera
The Dominican Medical College compares the Dominican Republic to "a little Haiti" in regard to the possible outbreak of cholera in La Cienaga. During a meeting with the press together with residents of the alleys 3, 12, and 13 and the Respaldo 9 Street, Los Arrozales, Cañada (Creek) de Bonavides and Los Cocos in La Cienaga, the specialist in infectious diseases Clemente Terrero said that the outbreaks of the epidemic are expanding in the country and he mentioned several communities in La Romana, Santiago Rodriguez, Las Matas de Farfan and Galvan, in Neyba. He demanded the reactivation of the National Cholera Committee.
