Leonel Almonte gets two years

SANTO DOMINGO.- The First Collegiate Tribunal of the Penal Chamber of the Court of the First Instance of the National District sentenced former banker Leonel Almonte to two years in prison, finding him guilty of swindling to the prejudice of depositors.

Judges Antonio Sanchez Mejia, president, and Esmirna Gisselle Mendez and Teofilo Andujar Sanchez also ordered the accused to pay back more than US$4,000,000 in favor of three depositors: Cristian C. Caraballo, Rainalda Rodriguez and Rosa N. Caraballo

In the same manner, the magistrates the accused to pay RD$100,000.000 for damages and pain inflicted on the depositors.

The prosecutor had requested a sentence of 15 years in jail for the accused.

The defense lawyers for Almonte, Manuel Garcia, Ingrid Hidalgo, Cecilio Gomez, Luis Abar and Elemer Tibor asked the magistrates to dismiss the charges of criminal association, swindling, and abuse of trust against their client.

The process against the president of the now non-existent Universal Financial Group has taken 16 years to work its way through the courts.
