Leonel says Obama was asked to help drug patrols

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.- President Leonel Fernandez reported that the Dominican Republic, Panama and the countries that make up the Central American Integrated System (SICA) set out for their fellow president from the United States, Barack Obama, the need for the United States to increase its maritime and arial supervision in order to stem drug trafficking in the region.
The president said that in a meeting he had with Obama, before the V Summit of the Americas, in Port of Spain, their Central American peers also requested that the contribution in technological equipment and personnel training of these countries.
He said that they identified issues of interest that affect the region, such as the economic crisis, the need to recapitalize the Inter American Development Bank (IDB), and the need to relax controls on the disbursement of money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Fernandez reassured reporters that Obama was very receptive and expressed his willingness to follow up on the issues of drug trafficking, the economic crisis, security, immigrations and prosperity.
"Fernandez said, "There will be new meetings and he left the doors open and a channel for communications so that we can call the White House directly and deal with regional and bilateral issues."
The Chief of State talked with journalists after participating in the closing ceremony of the Summit of the Americas which was held in the capital of Trinidad and Tobago from last Friday, and where 34 heads of state got together.
President Leonel Fernandez expressed his satisfaction with the meeting with Obama and the whole Summit process, because initially there was a perception of tension, but this was not the case, and contrary to the predictions, there was an atmosphere of good-fellowship.
Upon his arrival back to the Dominican Republic, the Chancellor, Carlos Morales Troncoso reported that given the tight agenda of the Summit, presidents Preval of Haiti and Fernandez of the Dominican Republic could not get together to deal with some bi-lateral issues.
He announced that the Haitian chancellor, Alrich Nicolas, will come to the Dr soon to find a date for the meeting that will take place in the country.
Leonel Fernandez and the small entourage that accompanied him to Port of Spain arrived back home yesterday at 2:35 in the afternoon on a private flight that landed at San Isidro Air Base.
He w as received by the Minister of the Armed Forces, Pedro Peña Antonio, the chief of the National Police, Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin, the director of Immigration, Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian, among other officials.
