Ligia Bonetti: we have to be more aggressive to achieve the desired industrial policy
SANTO DOMINGO. The President of the Industrial Association of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), Ligia Bonetti, argued yesterday friend industrial policy that contains sustainable development, an increase of formal jobs, and exports, as well as social cohesion.

She said that although they have been taking steps towards the desired industrial policy, more aggressive this is required because the majority of the countries are set on pushing policies for their industrial development in order to take over de markets.

Speaking as the invited guest at the monthly luncheon of the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham), the business leader said that for this industrial policy to be effective it should generate an alliance between the public and private sectors, which means they'd need for negotiation and the construction of consensus and to have as a framework the globalization process and the opening of markets.

In addition she noted that the industrial policy should focus on innovation, the development of biotechnologies, energy, climate change, nanotechnology, information technology and sustainability. He said that for the effectiveness of the industrial policy it is also necessary to count on the State not competing in the private sector and, if it does, it has to be on equal conditions, with a passive exchange policy and a liberalization of the markets as well as taking on as this guideline the insertion in territories.

During the activity which was attended by a large public of businessmen and women as well as government officials, in which the presence of the Vice President of the Republic Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez stood out, Bonetti underlined the fact that the principle problem which this sector has is that the majority of society, and especially the political actors, are not convinced of the importance of the industrialization of the country for the development of itself, which is put into evidence by the "in GES stumbling blocks" which day after day they have to face.

She stressed that, unfortunately, the policies of the Dominican Republic have deepened the process of "deindustrialization."

"I dare to think that there is a blindness which is keeping us from seeing how we are undoing the feasibility of the nation and how serious risks are rising in the social cohesion, that go from unemployment to drug trafficking, the deficiencies in education, the patronage system, the corruption and especially, the poverty in broad segments of the population," said Bonetti during her speech.

Stumbling blocks that affect industry

The president of the AIRD said that one of the principle stumbling blocks of the industrial sector as well as for the majority of Dominicans, is the cost of electricity. In addition she cited among the difficulties that are blocking the development of the sector, the access to financing and the problems of education and professional preparation of the human resources. "Nevertheless, if we have an industrial policy which will take us towards the future we can resolve these problems, at least the beginning of these problems," she assured her public.
