PRM says it will take report of bribes to the Attorney General

SANTO DOMINGO. The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) will file a formal report with the Attorney General of the Republic regarding the alleged purchase of votes of the legislators in order to pass the legislative proposal for the modification of the Constitution, which would enable the re - nomination of President Danilo Medina.

Nelson Arroyo, the spokesman for the PRM bloc of deputies, announced that next week they would present before the Attorney General, Francisco Dominguez Brito, testimonial evidence by legislators, both from this party as well as some allies, to whom offers were made. He said that those legislators are willing to tell how much, who and where the money was offered.

The complaints of corruption in order to pass the constitutional reform, were one of the issues debated on Saturday during the session of the National Review Assembly, where the proposal passed with 183 votes in favor, of a total of 222 legislators. Speaking out regarding this issue, among others, was the independent deputy Minou Taveras, Arroyo and Jorge Frias of the PRM.

Just yesterday, deputy Frias reiterated what he had said during the session: that they had attempted to buy his vote, but this time he was more specific.

He assured reporters that they arranged to meet in the cafeteria of a supermarket, where a man offered him RD$15 million. The offer, according to what he said, was made in the name of a state contractor, to whom the government supposedly owed RD$1.8 billion, an amount that would be paid in exchange for providing the money for the bribe.

"I told him to be very careful, that I was not for sale. I am a follower of Peña Gomez," he said. He also challenged those that say that he is talking without any base, to sue him.

As well as Arroyo are seeking to have the complaint investigated seriously, since they do not think that it would prosper if they took it to the Discipline Committee in the Chamber of Deputies as suggested by the president of the chamber, Abel Martinez, last Saturday.

On the other hand, the deputies of the government's Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) are in favor of the case being taken before the Discipline Committee and they asked for sanctions.

Ruddy Gonzalez, the spokesman for the PRD bloc of deputies, said that he felt that the complaints were very foolish and the most opportune thing is for the legislators to go before the Committee.

Tulio Jimenez, a PLD deputy, stated: "they have to be taken to the Committee and sanctioned so they do not keep flapping their mouths off, telling the country things that are not true." He accused Frias of speaking out to see if they call him. "But they are not going to call him, because her they are not modifying article 124 because no legislator is in favor of it, but rather because the people wanted to be," he stated.
