Protests in San Jose La Mina; they insist there was an agreement
Celso Marranzini warned that "it is not possible to forgive two months of electricity bills"

SANTIAGO. There were violent protests in the streets of San Jose La Mina yesterday over the suspension of electricity, while community representatives said that the Electricity Enterprise of the North (Ede-Norte) agreed during a meeting to exonerate the payment of two months of their electricity bills, due to the exaggerated electricity rate they were charging the barrio.
The president of the neighborhood board of the barrio, Francisco Consuegra, said that the community is surprised by the attitude taken by executives of Ede-Norte when they fail to comply with what had been agreed upon, the payment of just one of the three months they were trying to collect--with the other two months exonerated
During yesterday's demonstrations, resident of the La Mina barrio blocked the ecological avenue with burning tires, rocks, tree trunks, bottles and other rubbish, while dozens of police agents were sent to the place in order to prevent more disorder. Several persons were detained by the police.
The reaction
The vice-president of the Dominican Corporation of State-owned Electricity Enterprises (CDEEE), Celso Marranzini, called Diario Libre to deny that there was any agreement to exonerate two of the three months that the residents of La Mina owe Ede-Norte. "This sort of negotiation is impossible. This would be giving a bad example to other sectors", is what the executive said.
Meanwhile, the administrator of Ede-Norte, Feliz Tavarez, made it clear that the neighbors will not be sxonerated from payment of the two months of electricity.
Tavarez reported that Ede-Norte decided to suspend electricity service to the area and that it will only be reconnected when the people cover the expense of removal and replacement of the meters. Yesterday, the archbishop of the archdioceses of Santiago, Bishop Ramon de la Rosa y Carpio, said that if there was an agreement between the neighbors of San Jose La Mina and Ede-Norte, it would be better to be fulfilled.
A new agreement is reached
Electricity was re-established last night in the San Jose La Mina barrio, after executives of Ede-Norte met once again with community leaders, with whom they established new agreements in order to resolve the overdue debt for electricity service.
It was agreed that the debt would be paid in quotas, after a case by case review of the electricity bills that are considered to be exaggerated in order to correct mistakes.
