Ramon Oviedo, a universal artist

SANTO DOMINGO. Artists, friends, relatives and politicians regretted the passing at 92 of prize-winning artist Ramon Oviedo Herasme, early Sunday morning.
The Dominican College of Visual Artists, the noted Nelson Nuñez, together with fellow artist Rosa Tavarez, as well as actor and painter Angel Hache, his grandson Omar Molina Oviedo and his lifelong friend Antonio Ocaña spoke of his virtues as an artist and a person.
"For me, Ramon Oviedo is the greatest ever born in the Dominican Republic in the area of visual arts. Just like Rufino Tamayo, the Mexican giant, Osvaldo Guayasamin, that great Ecuadorian, and José Gomez Sicre, the critic, who thought that Oviedo was by far and away the greatest to have been born in the Dominican Republic," commented Antonio Ocaña who was contacted in Spain by telephone.
Ocaña kept his friendship with maestro Oviedo for more than 20 years, a time in which he worked at taking his art to unimagined places, as well as to important institutions in the United States, South America and Europe.
"Oviedo is a universal artist; he has a unique body of work. He was an honest man in his private and professional life, and who never negotiated his authenticity. I am honored to know that he always called me a friend.... At this moment we are broken into 20 pieces and I appreciate his grandson Omar Oviedo for keeping me informed," he said.
A voice of the family
Omar Molina Oviedo found strength to express his opinion of his grandfather, who he considered to be his father. "He was a complete man, of great principles, who is leaving a legacy to everyone. As a family we feel proud of having shared so many agreeable moments with him and with the affection that the people gave him during his life. We're going to protect him and provide continuity (to his work)," he said.
He will be cremated
The remains of Oviedo will be on view today starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln Ave.
In life, the Maestro Oviedo had asked that, upon his death, his remains were to be cremated. "We are going to have a viewing of his body at the funeral home and, later, what he had requested will be fulfilled in a private ceremony," said Molina.
He is dead, but his art is not
The seasoned and talented artist of the brush, Elsa Nuñez defined him as a great teacher. His art took him out of the Dominican territory and with that he projected the movement of visual arts of the country. "I believe we have lost one of our glories. My first show I did together with him and Candido Bido. Later we exhibited in other collections, we got along pretty fine," she remembered.
As a painter he was a great researcher. He was a person who enriched his work. "I believe that the Dominican College of Visual artists should put on a great exposition of all of his movement," she suggested.
Angel Hache, a painter and actor who had a good relationship with Oviedo, considered him as one of the great virtuosos of national art. "His death causes a lot of pain. Oviedo was self-taught and reached a place in Dominican visual art that is difficult to surpass... He was complete, a restorer... His work could be compared with the best overseas and he deserved the best prizes... His work will transcend," he said.
Rose Tavarez, an artist of great prestige, indicated that Oviedo has been one of those who most contributed to the country. "He handled all the styles... He did not limit himself to one area, he was an active man the left us great lessons. His work always maintained itself because of this... He was a great friend and he earned the respect for his political and social thoughts," said Tavarez.
