Rejection and caution on bond announcement

Business asks for care and opposition parties reject it out of hand

SANTO DOMIGNO.- The announcement by the administration that it would send to the National Congress a sovereign bond emission for a total of US$1.0 billion, was received with reservation by the business community and economists, while political leaders rejected the measure.

For the president of the National Organization of Commercial Enterprise (ONEC), the government should be very careful on deciding to go to the international capital market, without first putting into place a strict program of austerity.

On the other hand, the economist Henri Hebrard expressed his worry that the resources produced by the bonds will not be properly supervised, as has occurred with the resources from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The opposition leaders, Arturo Martinez Moya, Jose Osvaldo Leger and Orlando Jorge Mera said that they were against the government going to the international market to find the billion dollars in sovereign bonds.
