Scary number of young people dying
55 have died in last three months; experts say they don?t have opportunities

SANTO DOMINGO.- At total of 55 young persons, between the ages of 16 and 25, have died over the past three months in shootouts with police, fights, armed robberies, home invasion robberies and other crimes.
This data comes from the daily police reports and statistics that are filed in newspapers archives that are supplied from notes sent from the National Police.
During the first week of April, the police reported the death of Mario Rosario, Adalberto Soto and Arismendy Javier, the first two killed in Higuey in a shootout with a police patrol and the third in a fight in the Guaricanos section of North Santo Domingo.
In the second week there was the report of the death of young Maurin Batista, 17, who was knifed by her lover in Las Cañitas, as well as the death of Isidro del Rosario, Jose Manuel Compres, Maximo Rosendo Diaz, Rogelio Guzman and Marino Mendez during street fights that took place in San Juan de la Maguana, Juan Adrian, Los Alcarrizon, and El Almirante.
Alfredo Peralta and Marisol Quiñones, both psychologists, agree that the young start their lives of crime, "first, due to the lack of a strong home life, and second because of a lack of opportunities for education, jobs and places to play sports."
According to Peralta, the lack of guidance that exists among the youth pushes them to take off looking for a way to acquire some assets to show off in society.
22 young people died in May of this year, and the oldest was 24. They all died committing crimes, such as armed robbery, assaults, and fights, or in shootouts with the police that caught them violating the law.
Among the deceased is Jorge Soriano, a.k.a. "Jorgito" or "Sorianito", 19, who shot it out with the police after an attempted robbery of the Santo Tomas Internet Café in the Canta La Rana section of Los Alcarrizos went sour. His three companions managed to escape.
