School breakfasts will cost RD$2.0 million more
Ladom and Coop-Fenegano were left out of the deal and this affects 307,436 students

SANTO DOMINGO. With an adjustment of between 6% and 8% in the price of each ration which implies an increase of some RD$2.0 million per day, the absence of companies such as Lacteos Dominicanos (Ladom) and the Cooperative of Milk Producers and Cattlemen of the Northwest (Coop-Fededano), the Ministry of Education once more starts to distribute school breakfasts today.
The situation forced the authorities to reassign more than 500,000 of the quotas of these companies, which surpass 8,500, and this affects more than 300,000 students in the Deep South.
As he reported the renewal of the school breakfasts, the Minister of Education, Melanio Paredes, said that they reached an agreement with the suppliers of the program regarding the cost of operations and the payment of the debts of more than RD$500 million starting this month.
With the readjustment of the prices, the Ministry will spend RD$2.0 million more, going from the RD$16 million when the 2010-2011 school year started to RD$18 million a day starting today.
Regarding the reasons for the absence of Ladom and Coop-Fedegano, Paredes said that in the first case there were internal reasons, and in the second case it was because of problems due to drought which are keeping the milk producers from obtaining sufficient milk to supply the program.
He made it clear that these suppliers have their quotas guaranteed when they decide to return to the market.
Paredes spoke in the presence of representatives of the United Nations World Food Program and of the bakers and milk providers.
He promised to supervise the service process, in order to avoid new cases of student intoxications.
Quotas assigned
Pasteurizadora Rica will distribute 234.289 rations of milk and juice in La Vega, Bonao, Higuey and East Santo Domingo; Parmalat will distribute 305,000 rations in San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana and Santiago.
