Sections of Malecon are closed off
Municipalities intensify work on trimming trees and cleaning creeks

SD. The City Council for the National District announced yesterday a series of measures in response to the approach and possible effects of tropical storm Chantal. Among these are the possible closure of the George Washington Avenue (the Malecon) to traffic, as well as Güibia Plaza and Juan Baron, where they will post municipal police so that persons do not use these places.
The mayor of the National District, Roberto Salcedo, reported that he would have the use of 3,000 employees and the Fire Department to assist the people in case there is a need when Chantal passes by the capital.
Salcedo assured reporters that in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works they have cleaned up hundreds of storm drains; the department of Urban Cleanliness has 200 trucks ready for any eventuality; the Department of Movement and Traffic has ordered the removal of all signage that might pose a problem in high winds, and the Environmental Department and the CDEEE have trimmed trees around the city.

At the same time the municipality of East Santo Domingo reported that it has intensified the tree-trimming activities in their city; North Santo Domingo indicated that their work brigades have been cleaning drainage and creeks. The Fire Department of East Santo Domingo said that it had 12 units available for possible evacuations and fires, three ambulances and a small craft on the river Ozama.
Pedro Morel, the Environmental Director for North Santo Domingo said that they have worked on the :a Javilla and Majagual creeks in Sabana Perdida, and San Felipe and Canaan in Villa Mella in order to avoid the accumulation of solid wastes.
