Six provinces and DN have 61.5% of votes
There are 352,010 new voters on the voting rolls for these elections
SANTO DOMINGO. The National District and six provinces of the 31 in the country make up 61.5% of the electorate for the 16 May elections. They will also have 103 of the 178 deputies (without counting the 5 at-large deputies by accumulation of votes). The voting rolls now have 6,116,397 persons registered to vote.
Some 1,227,757 voters reside in the province of Santo Domingo, which is 20% of the electorate. The National District has 13%, Santiago has 11.22%, San Cristobal, 5.5%, Duarte has 3.65% and Puerto Plata has 3.51%.
These provinces also concentrate 449 of the 1,149 city council seats that are up for election (together with their substitutes) all over the nation.
Although the next elections are at the half-term, they are considered to be the most complicated in the history of the Dominican Republic. There are 4,046 positions that carry a 6 year term, and this is the reason why there is so much competition even though they are congressional and municipal elections. Because of the six year term, the political parties are going all out, especially for the deputies and city council members who are elected according to the number of voters.
According to the information from the Central Electoral Board (JCE), just the province of Santo Domingo has 36 deputies and 105 city council members. The National District has 18 deputies and 37 city council members; Santiago has 18 deputies and 95 city council members; and San Cristobal has 11 deputies and 70 council members.
At the municipal level, the cities with the largest electorate are the National District with 13%; East Santo Domingo with 8.9%; Santiago with7.9%; North Santo Domingo with 4%; West Santo Domingo with 3.5% and La Vega with2.9%.
The two provinces with the least number of voters are Independencia with 0.54% and Pedernales with0.28%. The cities with the fewest voters are Nagua with 0.84% and Villa Altagracia with 0.80%.
The regional distribution shows that 38% of the voters are in the North, 33.1% are in the National District and the province of Santo Domingo, 17.7% are in the South and 11.1% are in the East.
