Sur Futuro and UE will give "solar energy" to locations in the South
The project "Southern Solar Facilities" will benefit some 25,000 persons
PADRE LAS CASAS, AZUA. The Sur Futuro Foundation, with the auspices of the European Union (UE) began yesterday the execution of a rural electrification project through solar panels. The idea is that they will bring energy to more than 25,000 persons in the poorest communities of the provinces of San Juan, Azua, Barahona and Bahoruco.
The Southern Solar Facilities project has a cost of €1.8 million, of which the EU will provide €1.3 million. The project will last for three years, during which they will provide water treatment systems to the people of the communities. During this time the communities will be provided with some 500 lighting systems, both for homes as well as for schools, 75 refrigeration systems for markets, fishing cooperatives and educational centers as well as 10 water treatment plants.
According to the details which were presented by Waldo Pardilla, the project coordinator, it will also include the delivery of 2000 which will work with logs and biomass, which will reduce the consumption of wood by some 70%. Although they are still in the phase of sifting through the communities that will be benefited by the program, Pardilla explained that they will prioritize those that are in very poor conditions, specifically in the mountain areas and in some of the bateyes ( old barracks for sugar cane cutters).
According to Katia Mejia, the executive director of Sur Futuro, the initiative seeks to contribute to the sustainable development of the areas benefitted, without having to alter the environment.
"This is an opportunity to continue progressing with clean energy, which does not damage the environment," she commented after classifying the project as a historic marker.
From 5 to 7 megawatts
Every day the country produces between 5 and 7 megawatts of energy through privately owned solar panels, according to information from the director of the National Energy Commission, Enrique Ramirez. He pointed out that this amount of energy has been produced since 2007, when the Law for Incentives for Generation of Renewable Energy was created.
In this sense, he stressed that the two projects for 30 and 50 megawatts that will be installed in Monte Plata and in Montecristi, respectively, will use a system of solar panels. He pointed out also the creation of the regulation of net measurements, through which, persons that install the equipment can sell their excess energy to the distributors.
The official was one of the special invitees to the presentation of the Sur Futuro project.
