The blow by Quirino accelerates decline of Leonel Fernandez
SANTO DOMINGO. Three years back, nearly half (45%) of Dominicans had a favorable image of Leonel Fernandez, but now less than one of every four feel favorably towards him and his approval rating has dropped six points since October. Even more outstanding, the 62% of Dominicans now have an unfavorable image of the former President, and 50% have an intensely unfavorable image of him.

The decline of Fernandez since October has been headed by PLD voters. Among the PLD rank and file, his favorable rating has fallen eight points, compared with the fall of two points among PRD members. Only a third of the PLD members have a favorable image of the president of their party. In comparison, 82% have a favorable view of Medina.

The growing attention to the accusations of corruption has hit Fernandez. A majority, 55%, believe that Fernandez accepted the money from the drug trafficker Quirino Castillo as a campaign contribution and 44% of the PLD members believe the accusations. These accusations hit him hard. 76% of Dominicans said that this case makes them feel less favorable towards Leonel, including nearly three-quarters (73%), of the members of the Purple party.

As a result, now there is a majority that says that Fernandez is the most corrupt of the national leaders (Mejia used to compete with him in this category, but now only 18% say that Mejia is the most corrupt, while 51% point at Fernandez). Leonel even beats Mejia in this category among members of the PLD: 39% to 27% of the PLD members say that the potential PLD candidate is more corrupt than his PRM counterpart.
