SD. The continuing rains over much of the national territory have kept a total of 3,000 persons out of their homes according to a report yesterday from the Center for Emergency Operations (COE).

The agency has 19 provinces under alerts, eleven of them Yellow and eight in Green, given the fact that the conditions for more rains continue, although an improvement is seen for today.

The rains affected 614 houses, 400 of them in Navarrete where hail was reported and trees were knocked down, electricity lines were downed and there was damage to agriculture.

Also, in the town of Puñal in Santiago, 200 houses were flooded because of a deficiency in the drainage system.

All of the displaced persons are in the homes of family and friends. According to the report from the National Meteorological Office (Onamet), a low pressure trough over the island will continue to cause rains over a large portion of the territory, with most of it in the North, Northeast, the Central Mountains and the Frontier area.

The COE is maintaining the Yellow alert for the provinces of La Vega, Monsignor Nouel, Sánchez Ramírez, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Santiago, Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional and Puerto Plata. The Green alert is in place in Mao, San Juan, Santiago Rodríguez, Duarte, Monte Plata, Espaillat, La Altagracia and Sánchez.

The wind bursts

In addition to the 400 houses affected, the wind bursts, accompanied by rains, thunder and lightning, also knocked down electricity poles, trees, billboards and signs in Navarrete.

The city government of the town and other institutions are working on the repairs to the streets and part of the Duarte Highway that were blocked by refuse left by the atmospheric phenomena on Saturday night.

In the Duarte barrio of Navarrete, nine houses had their roofs ripped off by the strong winds, while in the Nico Lora sector, five houses were totally destroyed. Other sectors affected are El Viejo Carril, Barrio San Miguel, Jose Marti, Eudosia Polanco, Panchito Martinez, La Altagracia and others.

The deputy director of Civil Defense in Santiago, Francisco Arias, reported that there were no personal injuries. For his part, the governor of Santiago, Raul Martinez, announced that today the government would begin the distribution of food to those affected, as well as wood, zinc roofing and other construction materials for repairing the damaged houses.

The rains also caused landslides along Kilometer 12 of the Luperon Tourist Highway. Meteorology warned that the rains would continue.
