The Tucanos debuted by diverting aircraft
Bayahibe, La Romana. The Presidential Advisor on drugs, Marino Vinicio Castillo (Vincho) revealed that a small plane which was going to drop a load of drugs in the country last 17 June, had to do it in Haiti after it was detected by one of the Super Tucano aircraft.

Castillo, who is participating in the Second Maritime Symposium Against Drug Trafficking in the Americas, said that the drug drop that was intended for the Dominican Republic occurred in the Republic of Haiti, some 43 miles from the community of Banica in the South of the country.

The government official revealed that there have been three cases discovered recently by the surveillance services provided by the Super Tucano aircraft. He said that the last one occurred on 17 June, which was dropped in Haiti, since they could not do it in the Dominican Republic because it had been discovered by the Air Force planes.

Vincho Castillo assured reporters that by means of satellite photographs that he received it is possible to see the drug traffickers in Haiti, distributing money among the people that recovered the drop, although he did not reveal the origin of the illegal flight.

"This is to say that if it is not possible to unload in the Dominican Republic, we are going to do it in Haiti, because the drug traffickers have intelligence and money in order to manage their operations", he pointed out.

Likewise, he considered that it was necessary to assist the Haitian authorities in strengthening of the surveillance area in order to counteract the drug drops that cannot be done in the Dominican Republic as a result of the effective controls established by the local authorities.

The President's advisor on drug issues also set forth the need to reinforce the naval surveillance due to the fact that the drug traffickers are using the maritime route with more frequency because they feel cornered in the air space and on the ground.

He said that in the period between 2005 and 2008 they registered 357 drug flights because there was no surveillance of the air space like what exists now with the arrival of the Super Tucano airplanes acquired by the government.

The indications made by Vincho Castillo came in the framework of the celebration of the II Maritime Symposium Against Drug Trafficking in the Americas, which has been going on in Dreams Hotel in Bayahibe, La Romana.

The important event is sponsored by the Dominican Navy and 17 countries and the United States as well as 18 international organizations are taking part. Many of these organizations offer economic assistance to the institutions that fight against drug trafficking.

A common front

The chief of staff of the Mexican navy, Almiral Jorge Umberto Pastor Gomez, suggested on Tuesday the creation of a common front of all the countries to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking in the American continents. He assured the audience that the corruption sponsored by the gangs and the drug trafficking cartels has upset the social and economic environments of Mexico and the world.

He also said that the union of the nations against the curse of drugs is a basic priority in order to reduce this evil in the field of public safety that is in the care of the police and not the military. "The agreements of international cooperation have contributed to the reduction of drug trafficking, but it is necessary to increase the fight, the efficiency and take stronger and firmer decisions", he emphasized.
