The UN and Armed Forces seek end to human trafficking on frontier
The members of Cesfront will be trained to halt trafficking

SANTO DOMINGO. The Ministry of the Armed Forces signed a joint cooperation agreement to strengthen the mechanisms and the protection for victims of human trafficking, between the Specialized Corps of Frontier Security (Cesfront) , the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (Acnur).
The project pretends to improve the work of prevention, investigation and punishment of those crimes along the frontier points. And the agreement takes into account the international agreements ratified by the Dominican Republic through a training program for the Cesfront members.
The agreement establishes that the members of the Armed Forces stationed on the frontier will be trained in Human Rights, Children's Rights, and International Law for Refugees with regard to the protection of the victims, control and prevention of the crime of human trafficking.
Precisely during the middle of last month, Father Regino Martinez, S.J., the Coordinator of Frontier Solidarity, said that the trafficking of undocumented persons across the frontier from Haiti to the Dominican Republic generates millions of pesos a year, money that is distributed between the guides, owner of safe houses, transporters and security authorities.
As he made the report, the Jesuit priest said that although the volume of the migrants seems to be small, it is systematic during every 24 hour day and seven days a week.
At the same time, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez said that the convention that was signed yesterday includes the makeup and training of a team of facilitators on these issues and the strengthening of the mechanisms of coordination between governmental institutions, the civil society and the Armed Forces. All of this in favor of the identification and protection of the victims of human rights violations, persecution and transnational violations
Also, the United Nations agencies will offer technical assistance to the Armed Forces for the design and implementation of a system on monitoring and evaluating the situation. It will also assist in drawing up a Code of Conduct and Contingency Plans for the handling of cases of human trafficking of persons along the frontier.
