There are 1.5 million without new cédula; JCE updates parties
Delegates also speak with Rosario regarding the Law of Parties
SANTO DOMINGO. At just 14 months from the presidential, congressional and municipal elections of May 2016, there are 1,532,400 persons who need to obtain the new cédula, which is an identification card as well as a voter registration card. This represents 20.65% of those eligible for the document.
As of yesterday, the master list of persons needing the cédula totaled 7,422,084 persons registered, a number that was reported to the delegates of the political parties that met yesterday with the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Roberto Rosario, in his office.
In order to speed up the renewal of the document, this week they will finish installing several cédula centers in Italy, Switzerland, Holland and other places with large concentrations of the Diaspora. During the last elections alone, some 400,000 overseas Dominicans registered to vote.
The change of the cédula began on 15 April 2014, with the emission of the card to President Danilo Medina in the Presidential Palace. The JCE assures reporters that the new document contains security measures and special characteristics to avoid its falsification.
Taking as a reference a previous report published by the JCE on its webpage, it is calculated that between 5 February and 16 March of this year, they issued 219,668 cédulas, raising the percentage of renewed cards from 76.28% to 79.04% which is the current status.
At the present time, 23,546 persons are in the process of requesting the document. At the same time 24,492 persons who are in the category of foreigners, have renewed their cédulas.
A meeting with delegates
In the administrative meeting with the delegates, the JCE President gave them the up-to-date voter registration lists as of 16 March 2015, with their respective lists of the delivery of the new cédula.
The political delegate of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD, José Miguel Vasquez, also reported that conversations regarding complementary issues of the legislative proposals for the Law of Political Parties, with the idea that they can produce a consensus and finally approve the legislation in the National Congress.
