Tricom invests RD$230 million in Broad Band Internet
SANTO DOMINGO.- Tricom, the Dominican telecommunications company, carried out this year an investment of RD$230 million for expansion of its capacity to offer Broad Band Internet service.

The last of these investments was for the expansion of it capacity by means of using the Antilles I submarine cable that unites the Dominican Republic with Puerto Rico.

All together the expansion of the capacity that was done in the cable was 10 Gb (gigabytes), which is four times the initial capacity of the Antilles cable when it was inaugurated in 1997, and given that Tricom is co-owner of the undersea cable, it has a 37% stake in the expansion.

This enlarged facility will enable the business to continue growing aggressively and continue to offer its clients a guarantee of broadband access to the internet, as well as provide services such as international long distance at the same price as local service.

Starting now, with this expansion and the construction of the infrastructure needed for the cable, Tricom becomes one of the broadband supplies with the greatest international connectivity without intermediaries, which is to say that Tricom manages and will manage the requirements for expansion without depending on third parties.

The undersea cable Antilles I has two landing points in the Dominican Republic, one in Punta Cana in the East of the island and the other in the area of Cacique in Santo Domingo, and two landing points in Puerto Rico, at Isla Verde and Miramar in San Juan.

In Puerto Rico, the Antilles I cable goes on to join the principle facilities of providers of telecommunications services world wide, besides which it joins with the principal undersea cables that connect Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with the United States at places like Miami and New York.

The Dominican enterprise is hurrying to carry out investments intended to expand the direct capacity towards the United States through other cables where it has ownership participation.

Tricom also owns a part of and has agreements for connectivity with the Arcos I cable whose landing point is Puerto Plata which assures continual service in the case of any contingency.

Tricom is the only provider of Broadband Internet Service using multiple access technologies such as ADSL, Cable modem, Wimax, and Fiber optic, designed for residential, medium and corporate users.

More investments

Tricom invested RD$1.150 billion in 2008 to continue its expansion of its connectivity capacity with broadband internet which permitted it to continue implementing new technological solutions, increase the VoIP services and accelerate the process of digitalization of television by cable. It also carried the launching of its new IP technology solution, Line USB-Phone, which permits users to make and receive calls through any computer.
