Tropical wave goes away, rains diminish today
Hurricane season begins: this year there will be seven storms predicted to be of low intensity
SANTO DOMINGO. The remnants of the tropical wave and low pressure trough which affected the Northeast of the country this weekend will continue contributing scattered rain showers with isolated thunder and lightning over several provinces of the national territory.
The rains coincide with the start of the hurricane season which this year will have below normal activity with regard to the formation of only seven tropical cyclones, of which three will reach a category of hurricane and one might become intense, according to the director of the National Meteorological Office (Onamet), Gloria Ceballos.
Ceballos reported that the institution is continuing its monitoring of its four wave-graph machines placed strategically in the Multimodal Port of Caucedo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Barahona, in order to obtain real time information regarding wave height.
Regarding the rains which fell over the weekend, the meteorological report says that the rains caused by the tropical wave will be reduced gradually today, due to a low pressure trough located over the Windward Channel, which gives way to the incidence of an anti-cyclone circulation which will be limiting rain activity.
Onamet's forecast for today calls for a partly cloudy sky with increasing clouds in the afternoon and night and the occurrence of dispersed showers, isolated thunder and lightning and possible wind bursts in the southeast, northeast, North, Central Mountains and the frontier area.
In the report they say that the remnants of the tropical wave are reflected in the combination of the humid air mass and the instability of the low pressure trough to the Northeast of Dominican territory, which will produce local showers and thunderstorms in the provinces of Samana, Maria Trinidad Sanchez, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal, Puerto Plata, Duarte, Sanchez Ramirez, Monsignor Noel, La Vega, Santiago, son Cristo of, La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, San Pedro and La Romana.
For tomorrow, Tuesday, there will be an increase in clouds in the afternoon and night with scattered showers, thunder and possible wind bursts.
Regarding temperatures, they should vary between 29°C and 32°C.
The Onamet authorities recommend the continued rationalization of water use all over the country, due to the important deficit of rainfall which they say continues, in spite of the rains that occurred over the weekend.
A deficit of rain still exists in the country, which in the last two months was marked by two areas of accumulation in the area of Santo Domingo and in the southern part of Monte Plata as well as Villa Altagracia and Yamasa, which oscillated between 75 and 170 mm.

Given the rains registered yesterday and the possibility of new rain showers, the Center of Emergency Operations (COE) maintains a green alert for the provinces of La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, El Seibo and Greater Santo Domingo because of possible city flooding and extended the warning to Montecristi (Villa Vasquez, Castañuela and Palo Verde) and Puerto Plata.
Likewise, the COE authorities called on persons who reside in areas of high risk, such as those near rivers and streams to be alert for possible sudden flooding .
The COE continues following the guidelines of Onamet with relation to the possibility of rain showers in order to maintain or discontinue the alerts.
